Study Majors

Present Graduate Fields in the Department

At present, the Department of Chemistry at IUST offers the Master of Science degree in Chemistry with graduate work in the fields of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry. On the other hand, Ph.D. admission has been started in the fields of inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry since September 2009.

  Inorganic Chemistry

Inorganic chemistry is a branch of chemistry dealing with compounds which their skeleton do not contain carbon atom. Studying the chemistry of metals, nonmetals, acids, bases, salts, coordinated complexes of transition metals along with chain, cyclic, cage, and cluster inorganic compounds and their applications in biochemistry, polymerization and organometallic are subject of inorganic chemistry.

  Analytical Chemistry

Analytical chemistry is the science that seeks ever improved means of measuring the chemical composition of natural and artificial materials. Chemical composition is the entire picture (composition) of the material at the chemical scale and includes geometric features such as molecular morphologies and distributions of species within a sample as well as single dimensional features such as percent composition and species identity. Unlike the sub disciplines inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry , analytical chemistry (like physical chemistry ) is not restricted to any particular type of chemical compound or reaction . The analytical results enabled by analytical chemistry have played critical roles in science from the understanding of basic science to a variety of practical applications, such as biomedical applications, environmental monitoring, quality control of industrial manufacturing and forensic science .

  Physical Chemistry

Physical Chemistry – based on mathematical and Physical rules – studies the reactions from the thermodynamic and synetic points of view, and in on the important aspects in chemical engineering, petroleum, polymer, metallurgy, tissue engineering and cdour chemistry.

Physical Chemistry is including application of mathematical and physical concepts for better understanding of chemical concept, and it studies the properties and be haviour of chemical systems using spectroscopical, electrochemical, thermodynamic, and quantumical methods.

This port of chemistry is of industrial importance, because of its specifications in chiding material investigations from the point of view of magnetical, electrical properties, yiels, and rate of reactions.

  Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry is a part of chemistry, which includes studying of carbon compounds and their reaction.

Many different kind of substances, e.g. drugs, vitamins, plastics, natural and synthetical fibres, pigments, paper and ink, benzin, rubber tires, and carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are organic substances.

Determination of the structure of organic substances, study of their reactors, and developing of new synthetical methods are of organic chemists challenges.

Different topics in organic chemistry are:

  - Polymer

  - Heterocycles

  - Organometallics

  - natural substances

  - drugs

  - Organic chemistry is also the fundraisetal part of biochemistry and medicine. Alive organics are included of organic material, in addition to water. Molecular Biochemistry is organic chemistry, indeed.

Degrees

- Master of Science (M.S.) in Chemistry

The program is designed for the student who intends, upon completion, to work as a professional chemist, to study for the Ph.D., or to seek further training (e.g., in business or engineering). The department's program of teaching and research spans the breadth of chemistry. General fields covered include organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and applied chemistry.

 - Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry

The program represents the highest level of formal study or research in chemistry and is aimed at preparing students for careers such as innovation in diverse areas of chemical science and technology to solve national needs or develop the of chemical knowledge.
