 Introduction

The Islamic Studies program at Iran University of Science and Technology introduces students to the major methodological and theoretical issues in the study of the Islamic tradition. Students study classical and contemporary topics from an Islamic perspective.

The expressed goal for offering these courses is to situate the study of Islam within a globalized world. Accordingly the curriculum covers topics of recent scholarly significance including Islamic thought, the relationship between human and religion, Islamic history, Islamic civilization, and Islam and politics.

These courses help develop strong individuals well equipped for a variety of post-graduate opportunities in academia, government, and life.

The Islamic Studies program at IUST was founded in 1981 shortly after the victory of the Islamic Republic, where the need for observing religious and spiritual awareness in higher education institutions became evident. The staff of the Cultural Revolution, which had been formed by the command of the Late Imam Khomeini (ra) established the first Islamic Studies codification program, and asked the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education to incorporate twelve Islamic Studies credits into a student’s study program.

The IUST Islamic Studies program has 9 faculty members and four staff members in two areas of research and academics. Each semester nearly three thousand students complete sixteen courses in Islamic Studies. In addition to managing the regular curriculum, Islamic Studies faculty members conduct research in Islamic research centers, and cooperate with the vice chancellery for research on university and student related topics.
