Abstract

In this article, an efficient methodology is presented to optimize the topology of structural systems under transient loads. Equivalent static loads concept is used to deal with transient loads and to solve an alternate quasi-static optimization problem. The maximum strain energy of the structure under the transient load during the loading interval is used as objective function. The objective function is calculated in each iteration and then the dynamic optimization problem is replaced by a static optimization problem, which is subsequently solved by a convex linearization approach combining linear and reciprocal approximation functions. The optimal layout of a deep beam subjected to transient loads is considered as a case study to verify the effectiveness of the presented methodology. Results indicate that the optimal layout is dependant of the loading interval.

Abstract

This paper presents application of an improved Harmony Search (HS) technique and Charged System Search algorithm (CSS) to estimate transport energy demand in Iran, based on socio-economic indicators. The models are developed in two forms (exponential and linear) and applied to forecast transport energy demand in Iran. These models are developed to estimate the future energy demands based on population, gross domestic product (GDP), and the data of numbers of vehicles (VEH). Transport energy consumption in Iran is considered from 1968 to 2009 as the case of this study. The available data is partly used for finding the optimal, or near optimal values of the weighting parameters (1968-2003) and partly for testing the models (2004-2009). Finally transport energy demand in Iran is forecasted up to the year 2020.

Abstract

In this study, an approach for damage detection of large-scale structures is developed by employing kinetic and modal strain energies and also Heuristic Particle Swarm Optimization (HPSO) algorithm. Kinetic strain energy is employed to determine the location of structural damages. After determining the suspected damage locations, the severity of damages is obtained based on variations of modal strain energy between the analytical models and the responses measured in damaged models using time history dynamic analysis data. In this paper, damages are modeled as a reduction of elasticity modulus of structural elements. The detection of structural damages is formulated as an unconstrained optimization problem that is solved by HPSO algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the results are compared with those provided in previous studies. To demonstrate the ability of this method for detection of multiple structural damages, different types of damage scenarios are considered. The results show that the proposed method can detect the exact locations and the severity of damages with a high accuracy in large-scale structures.

Abstract

This article aims to study the self-supporting truss towers used to support large wind turbines. The goal is to evaluate and validate numerically by finite element method the structural analysis when the lattice structures of the towers of wind turbines are subjected to static loads and these from common usage. With this, it is expected to minimize the cost of transportation and installation of the tower and maximize the generation of electricity, considering technical standards and restrictions of structural integrity and safety, making vibration analysis and the required static and dynamic loads, thereby preventing failures by fractures or mechanical fatigue. Practical examples of towers will be designed by the system and will be tested in structural simulation programs using the Finite Element Method. This analysis is performed on the entire region coupling action of the turbine, with variable sensitivity to vibration levels. The results obtained for freestanding lattice tower are compared with the information of a tubular one designed to support the generator with the same characteristics. At the end of this work it was possible to observe the feasibility of using lattice towers that proved better as its structural performance but with caveats about its dynamic performance since the appearance of several other modes natural frequency thus reducing the intervals between them in low frequency and theoretically increase the risk of resonance.

Abstract

Vibration based techniques of structural damage detection using model updating method, are computationally expensive for large-scale structures. In this study, after locating precisely the eventual damage of a structure using modal strain energy based index (MSEBI), To efficiently reduce the computational cost of model updating during the optimization process of damage severity detection, the MSEBI of structural elements is evaluated using properly trained cascade feed-forward neural network (CFNN). In order to achieve an appropriate artificial neural network (ANN) model for MSEBI evaluation, a set of feed-forward artificial neural networks which are more suitable for non-linear approximation, are trained. All of these neural networks are tested and the results demonstrate that the CFNN model with log-sigmoid hidden layer transfer function is the most suitable ANN model among these selected ANNs. Moreover, to increase damage severity detection accuracy, the optimization process of damage severity detection is carried out by particle swarm optimization (PSO) whose cost function is constructed based on MSEBI. To validate the proposed solution method, two structural examples with different number of members are presented. The results indicate that after determining the damage location, the proposed solution method for damage severity detection leads to significant reduction of computational time compared to finite element method. Furthermore, engaging PSO algorithm by efficient approximation mechanism of finite element (FE) model, maintains the acceptable accuracy of damage severity detection.

Abstract

In this paper, based on maximizing the outrigger-belt truss system’s strain energy, a methodology for determining the optimum location of a flexible outrigger system is presented. Tall building structures with combined systems of framed tube, shear core, belt truss and outrigger system are modeled using continuum approach. In this approach, the framed tube system is modeled as a cantilevered beam with box cross section. The effect of outrigger and shear core systems on framed tube’s response under lateral loading is modeled by a rotational spring placed at the location of belt truss and outrigger system. Optimum location of this spring is obtained when energy absorbed by the spring is maximized. For this purpose, first derivative of the energy equation with respect to spring location as measured from base of the structure, is set to zero. Optimum location for outrigger and belt truss system is calculated for three types of lateral loadings, i.e. uniformly and triangularly distributed loads along structure’s height, and concentrated load at top of the structure. Accuracy of the proposed method is verified through numerical examples. The results show that the proposed method is reasonably accurate. In addition, for different stiffness of shear core and outrigger system, several figures are presented that can be used to determine the optimum location of belt truss and outrigger system.

Abstract

Growing tendency for Urbanization and rapid development of the cities has resulted in urban neighborhoods obstructing the access of each other to the natural sources e.g. solar energy, natural ventilation. Sunlight as the main part of input energy in urban energy balance equation and natural lighting is of vital importance. This paper attempts to achieve an optimum morphology for residential blocks in urban area with the highest exposure to the sunlight. To reach this goal a pilot area in Tabriz’s downtown was selected and regarding solar angle, local street regulations and the width of surrounding streets 3 different scenarios for the buildings blocks were defined. Using a three-dimensional microclimate model, ENVI-met, solar access of defined scenarios was calculated for the longest and the shortest day of the year. Results showed that Type C2 (highest, more open spaces) is a more efficient style for winter times as it receives more of the sun’s energy and also the amount of sun it gets during a day and type B2 (medium open space and height) is the better for summer as it gets less energy from the sun and it is exposed to sunlight less than other types in a hot summer day.

Abstract

The objective of this work is to predict the temperature of the different types of walls which are Ferro cement wall, reinforced cement concrete (RCC) wall and two types of cavity walls (combined RCC with Ferrocement and combined two Ferro cement walls) with the help of mathematical modeling. The property of low thermal transmission of small air gap between the constituents of combine materials has been utilized to obtain energy efficient wall section. Ferro cement is a highly versatile form of reinforced concrete made up of wire mesh, sand, water, and cement, which possesses unique qualities of strength and serviceability. The significant intention of the proposed technique is to frame a mathematical modeling with the aid of optimization techniques. Mathematical modeling is done by minimizing the cost and time consumed in the case of extension of the existing work. Mathematical modeling is utilized to predict the temperature of the different wall such as RCC wall, Ferro cement, combined RCC with Ferro cement and combined Ferro cement wall. The different optimization algorithms such as Social Spider Optimization (SSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Group Search Optimization (GSO) are utilized to find the optimal weights α and β of the mathematical modeling. All optimum results demonstrate that the attained error values between the output of the experimental values and the predicted values are closely equal to zero with the SSO model. The results of the proposed work are compared with the existing methods and the minimum errors with SSO algorithm for the case of two combined RCC wall was found to be less than 2%.

Abstract

For application of the plastic analysis and design methods the control of the plastic behaviour of the structures is an important requirement. In this study, the complementary strain energy of the residual forces is considered as an overall measure of the plastic performance of the structure. Shakedown theorem for the analysis of the plastic behaviour of the laterally loaded piles is developed and applied to single vertical long pile. Limit curves are presented for the shakedown load multipliers. The formulations of the problems lead to mathematical programming which are solved by the use of nonlinear algorithm.

Abstract

The available studies for estimating the characteristics of hydraulic jump are only for artificial or natural beds, and very limited researches have simultaneously considered artificial and natural beds. The aim of this study is to present comprehensive equations and models for predicting the characteristics of hydraulic jump in artificial and natural rough beds with various dimensions, arrangement and roughness forms. The experimental data of different researches on two artificial and natural rough beds (containing 559 data series) were collected. After randomization, the data were used in combination of 75-25 for training and testing the two intelligent models of K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and M5 model tree with various scenarios and their performance were evaluated in estimation of hydraulic jump characteristics (including sequent depth, energy loss and shear force coefficient). Then, the existing empirical equations examined and calibrated and new optimized equations were derived using Solver command in Excel software. The results of the best intelligent models were analyzed and compared with the best calibrated and new optimized equations. Both the intelligent models had the same performance. In the M5 model tree, the best scenario of all the three parameters of sequent depth (R2=0.90), energy loss (R2=0.94), and shear force coefficient (R2=0.81) obtained by using Froude number as input parameter. The best empirical equations were Abbaspour et al.'s (R2=0.90), Abbaspour and Farsadizadeh's (R2=0.90), and Akib et al.’s (R2=0.83) for the sequent depth, the energy loss and the shear force coefficient, respectively. The calibrated and new optimized equations had a similar precision as the intelligent models, but their errors were less than that of the best empirical equations.

Abstract

Civil infrastructures such as bridges and buildings are prone to damage as a result of natural disasters. To understand damages induced by these events, the structure needs to be monitored. The field of engineering focusing on the process of evaluating the location and the intensity of the damage to the structure is called Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Early damage prognosis in structures is the fundamental part of SHM. In fact, the main purpose of SHM is obtaining information about the existence, location, and the extent of damage in the structure. Since numerous structural damage detection problems can be solved as an inverse problem based on the proposed objective functions by using optimization algorithm, in this paper, related studies are investigated which discussing objective functions based on Modal Strain Energy (MSE) and flexibility methods including Modal Flexibility (MF), and Generalized Flexibility Matrix (GFM). To illustrate the extent of effectiveness of these objective functions based on the above-mentioned modal parameters, an efficiency index called Impact Factor (IF) is defined. Finally, the best objective function is introduced for each numerical case study based on IF by means of evaluating the obtained result.

Abstract

The impact damper is a passive method for controlling vibrations of dynamic systems. It is designed by placing one or several masses in a container, which is installed on the structure. Damping performance is affected by many parameters, such as the mass ratio of the primary structure, size, number, and material of the particles, friction and restitution coefficients of the particles and gap distance. Impact damper is effective, economical, and practical and its functionality can be further enhanced by an optimal design. In this paper, first, the mathematical modeling of a rigid impact damper used in free vibration reduction of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system is performed. The results on this step are validated with those results of previous studies, and a good agreement is achieved. Next, the robust hybrid optimization method that is called Imperialist Competitive Ant Colony Optimization (ICACO) is introduced. After that, the damper function is optimized using ICACO, and the optimum values of the effective parameters for maximizing damping effectiveness are obtained. Comparing the results of the optimized and the basic designs shows that the optimization method is robust and the optimal results are practical. The optimum design of damper parameters using ICACO method can damp more than %94 of the system’s initial energy in a short time.

Abstract

Nowadays, energy crisis is one of the most important issues faced by most countries. Given the accommodation of a large population, high-rise buildings have a significant role in creating or resolving this crisis. A recent solution with regard to the optimization and reduction of energy consumption is using smart systems in buildings. In fact, with the help of modern knowledge, smart buildings consume energy in the right place and time. By transforming a simple building into a dynamic one, not only will it be able to adapt to changing environmental conditions, it will also consider the living habits of dwellers and comfort standards in order to provide maximum satisfaction. Moreover, the money spent on making smart appliances will be fully compensated after a short while, saving the overall costs and energy. This descriptive-analytical study, conducted using library resources, e-books and papers, is an attempt to examine the effect of smartization on optimizing and increasing the efficiency of high-rise buildings. The results of comprehensive surveys in various sectors related to smart buildings show that one can optimize energy consumption to take an effective step in solving global energy issues using smart systems in buildings. This study is devoted to energy consumption of smart systems employing an efficient continuous evolutionary meta-heuristic algorithm.

Abstract

Optimization of public space energy consumption can basically improve the savings and the ratio of energy consumption and resources entirely. In this regard any methodology and system to shorten the redundant use of energy in different spots of the public space and to distribute energy based on significance of each zone will contribute in the task. This study has sought to develop a prototype of a multi-function smart system to monitor and control the use of energy in a space in terms of temperature, brightness and ventilation based on the significance of each zone according to the traffic calculated during time periods. Although in the current prototype there has not yet been photovoltaics embedded in the device, it has been accounted for in software section.
The monitoring system performs to monitor and store temperature, light intensity, CO2 concentration, and traffic at each zone while control system acts based on the zone significance and mechanism used in each energy consuming device including heaters, coolers, lights, etc. Findings on pilot scale shows that optimization of energy usage by such a system can drastically reduce space energy consumption while the optimal configuration of the multi-function system depends on the space conditions. Space conditions include climatic, area, etc. Although zero-energy building require further researches to be realized and utilized, this system can be perceived as first steps toward this goal.

Abstract

In present study, the effects of optimization on seismic energy spectra including input energy, damping energy and yielding hysteretic energy are parametrically discussed. To this end, 12 generic steel moment-resisting frames having fundamental periods ranging from 0.3 to 3s are optimized by using uniform damage and deformation approaches subjected to a series of 40 non-pule strong ground motions. In order to obtain the optimum distribution of structural properties, an iterative optimization procedure has been adopted. In this approach, the structural properties are modified so that inefficient material is gradually shifted from strong to weak areas of a structure. This process is continued until a state of uniform damage is achieved. Then, the maximum energy demand parameters are computed for different structures designed by optimum load pattern as well as code-based pattern, and the mean energy spectra, energy-based reduction factor and the dispersion of the results are compared and discussed. Results indicate that optimum seismic load pattern can significantly affect the energy demands spectra especially in inelastic range of response. In addition, using energy-based reduction factors of optimum structures in short-period and long-period regions will result in respectively overestimation and underestimation of the required input energy demands for code-based structures, reflecting the difference dose exists in reality between the conventional forced-based methodology and energy-based seismic design approach that can more realistically incorporate the frequency content and duration of earthquake ground motions.

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper was to use a combination of Energy-based design method and whale algorithm (WOA), hereinafter referred to as E-WOA, to optimize steel moment frames and improve the seismic performance. In E-WOA, by properly estimating the seismic input energy and determining the optimal mechanism for the structure, steel frames are designed based on the energy balance method; according to the results, in a suitable search space, optimization is performed using the WOA algorithm. The objective function of the WOA algorithm, in addition to the frame weight, is meant to improve the behavior of the structure based on the performance level criteria of the ASCE41-17 standard and the uniformity of the drift distribution at the frame height. The results show that the initial design of the Energy method reduces the computational volume of the WOA algorithm to achieve the optimal solution and the plastic hinge pattern in frame is more favorable in the E-WOA method than in the design done by the Energy method.

Abstract

Beyond common practice that treats structural damage detection as an optimization problem, the present work offers another approach that updates boundaries of the damage ratios. In this approach the bandwidth between such lower and upper boundaries, is adaptively reduced aiming to coincide at the true damage state. Formulation of the proposed method is developed using modal strain energy in a system of finite elements. A resolution-based technique is applied so that the search space cardinality can be defined and then reduced. The proposed method is validated on different structural types including beam, frame and truss examples with various damage scenarios. The results exhibit high cardinality reduction and capability of the proposed iterative method in squeezing the design space for more efficient search.

Abstract

Improving the quality of open spaces and human comfort is necessary for more human-inaccessible spaces. Therefore, bus stations as open spaces for traveling thousands of people continuously are considered essential in absorbing sun rays and providing comfort. This paper investigates the performance of BRT stations in Tehran province in the summer, considering the highest shading. The second stage proposes a new graphic cable-stayed roof to compare the sun's path and shade. Ten stations of Moein-Tajrish terminals with South-North orientation were selected in this regard. Then, all the station details were calculated and analyzed in the Grasshopper Modeling Software. And the shadow and sunlight were evaluated and analyzed during the summer months between 12 am to 2 pm at noon. In order to evaluate the compatibility of the selected samples, three variables, including orientation, the height of the awning, and the slope of the awning, were considered orientation of 5, the height of 1, and the gradient of 19 introduced as the most optimal model. Also, studies and analyses were carried out in Honey Bee & Ladybug plugins, including Qualitative Analysis, Hourly Quantitative Analysis, and Energy Quantitative Analysis. The results showed that the selected case sample is more than 55% in the desired shading. The second stage proposes a new graphic cable-stayed roof to compare the sun's path and shade for the structure.

Abstract

This paper proposes a method for structural damage detection through the sensitivity analysis of modal shapes in the calculation of modal strain energy (MSE). For this purpose, sensitivity equations were solved to determine the strain energy based on dynamic data (i.e., modal shapes). An objective function was then presented through the sensitivity-based MSE to detect structural damage. Due to the nonlinearity of sensitivity equations, the objective function of the proposed formulation can be minimized through the shuffled shepherd optimization algorithm (SSOA). The first few modes were employed for damage detection in solving the inverse problem. The proposed formulation was evaluated in a few numerical examples under different conditions. The numerical results indicated that the proposed formulation was efficient and effective in solving the inverse problem of damage detection. The proposed method not only minimized sensitivity to measurement errors but also effectively identified the location and severity of structural damage.
