Abstract

In this paper, a methodology is presented for optimum shape design of double-layer grids subject to gravity and earthquake loadings. The design variables are the number of divisions in two directions, the height between two layers and the cross-sectional areas of the structural elements. The objective function is the weight of the structure and the design constraints are some limitations on stress and slenderness of the elements besides the vertical displacements of the joints. To achieve the optimization task a variant of particle swarm optimization (PSO) entitled as quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (QPSO) algorithm is employed. The computational burden of the optimization process due to performing time history analysis is very high. In order to decrease the optimization time, the radial basis function (RBF) neural networks are employed to predict the desired responses of the structures during the optimization process. The numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented methodology

Abstract

Many optimization techniques have been proposed since the inception of engineering optimization in 1960s. Traditional mathematical modeling-based approaches are incompetent to solve the engineering optimization problems, as these problems have complex system that involves large number of design variables as well as equality or inequality constraints. In order to overcome the various difficulties encountered in obtaining the solution of these problems, new techniques called metaheuristic algorithms are suggested. These techniques are numerical optimization algorithms that are based on a natural phenomenon. In this study, a state-of-art improved harmony search method with a new adaptive error strategy is proposed to handle the design constraints. Number of numerical examples is presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm in solving engineering optimization problems.

Abstract

Endurance Time Method (ET) is a dynamic analysis in which structures are subjected to intensifying accelerograms that are optimized in a way that seismic performance of structures can be estimated at different hazard levels with the best possible accuracy. For the currently available ET accelerograms, regardless of the shaking characteristic, an excitation level is recognized as a representative of a specific hazard level, when the acceleration and the displacement spectrum produced by the ET accelerograms up to that excitation level will be compatible with the acceleration and the displacement spectrum associated with that hazard level. This study compares the shaking characteristics of the current ET accelerograms with the ground motions. For this purpose, distribution of plastic cycles and the equivalent number of the cycles are considered as shaking properties of a motion. This study suggests a procedure to achieve the best possible consistency between the equivalent number of cycles of the current ET records and the ground motions. Moreover, a procedure to generate the new generation and optimization of the ET accelerograms which are more consistent with the ground motions are suggested.

Abstract

The present study attempts to apply an efficient yet simple optimization (SOPT) algorithm to optimum design of truss structures under stress and displacement constraints. The computational efficiency of the technique is improved through avoiding unnecessary analyses during the course of optimization using the so-called upper bound strategy (UBS). The efficiency of the UBS integrated SOPT algorithm is evaluated through benchmark sizing optimization problems of truss structures and the numerical results are reported. A comparison of the numerical results attained using the SOPT algorithm with those of modern metaheuristic techniques demonstrates that the employed algorithm is capable of locating promising designs with considerably less computational effort.

Abstract

This article introduces three simple ideas that lead to the efficient design of regular moment frames. The finite module concept assumes that the moment frame may be construed as being composed of predesigned, imaginary rectangular modules that fit into the bays of the structure. Plastic design analysis aims at minimizing the demand-capacity ratios of elements of ductile moment frames by inducing the strength and stiffnesses of groups of members in accordance with certain design criteria, rather than investigating their suitability against the same rules of compliance. Collapse modes and stability conditions are imposed rather than investigated. In short, theory of structures is applied rather than followed. Plastic displacement control suggests that in addition to conducting failure analysis, the maximum displacements of plausible failure modes at incipient collapse should also be taken into consideration. While two collapse mechanisms may share the same carrying capacity, their maximum displacements may be different.

Abstract

This study deals with performance-based design optimization (PBDO) of steel moment frames employing four different metaheuristics consisting of genetic algorithm (GA), ant colony optimization (ACO), harmony search (HS), and particle swarm optimization (PSO). In order to evaluate the seismic capacity of the structures, nonlinear pushover analysis is conducted (PBDO). This method is an iterative process needed to meet code requirements. In the PBDO procedure, the metaheuristics minimize the structural weight subjected to performance constraints on inter-story drift ratios at various performance levels. Two numerical examples are presented demonstrating the superiority of the PSO to the GA, ACO and HS metaheuristic algorithms.

Abstract

This study was prompted by the need to elaborate on recent developments in plastic design of, parallel chord Vierendeel girders (VG). The paper proposes exact, general solutions to two novel classes of VG under practical loading conditions, a-VG of uniform section, where the chords and the verticals may be composed of two different prismatic sections, and b-VG of uniform strength, where the constituent elements are selected in such a way as to induce a state of equal stress for all members of the structure. It has been shown that the total weight of both classes of VG can be minimized by the proper selection of the relative strengths of the members of each system. The essence of the paper is based on a novel failure mechanism presented for the first time in this article. It has been shown that racking moments can be utilized to conduct spot checks on final solutions. Several generic examples have been provided to demonstrate the applications and the validity of the proposed solutions.

The objective of this paper is to present an optimal design for single-layer barrel vault frames via improved magnetic charged system search (IMCSS) and open application programming interface (OAPI). The IMCSS algorithm is utilized as the optimization algorithm and the OAPI is used as an interface tool between analysis software and the programming language. In the proposed algorithm, magnetic charged system search (MCSS) and improved harmony search (IHS) are utilized to achieve a good convergence and good solutions especially in final iterations. The results confirm the efficiency of OAPI as a powerful interface tool in the analysis process of barrel vault structures and also the ability of IMCSS algorithm in fast convergence and achieving optimal results.

Abstract

This paper attempts to improve the computational efficiency of the well known particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for tackling discrete sizing optimization problems of steel frame structures. It is generally known that, in structural design optimization applications, PSO entails enormously time-consuming structural analyses to locate an optimum solution. Hence, in the present study it is attempted to lessen the computational effort of the algorithm, using the so called upper bound strategy (UBS), which is a recently proposed strategy for reducing the total number of structural analyses involved in the course of design optimization. In the UBS, the key issue is to identify those candidate solutions which have no chance to improve the search during the optimum design process. After identifying those non-improving solutions, they are directly excluded from the structural analysis stage, diminishing the total computational cost. The performance of the UBS integrated PSO algorithm (UPSO) is evaluated in discrete sizing optimization of a real scale steel frame to AISC-LRFD specifications. The numerical results demonstrate that the UPSO outperforms the original PSO algorithm in terms of the computational efficiency.

Abstract

Network design problem is one of the most complicated and yet challenging problems in transportation planning. The Bi-level, non-convex and integer nature of network design problem has made it into one of the most complicated optimization problems. Inclusion of time dimension to the classical network design problem could add to this complexity. In this paper an Ant Colony System (ACS) has been proposed to solve the Time Dependent Network Design Problem (T-NDP). The proposed algorithm has been used to solve different networks: A small size, a medium size and a large scale network. The results show that the proposed model has superior performance compared to the previous method proposed for solving the T-NDP.

Abstract

In the present study, the reliability assessment of performance-based optimally seismic designed reinforced concrete (RC) and steel moment frames is investigated. In order to achieve this task, an efficient methodology is proposed by integrating Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and neural networks (NN). Two NN models including radial basis function (RBF) and back propagation (BP) models are examined in this study. In the proposed methodology, MCS is used to estimate the total exceedence probability associated with immediate occupancy (IO), life safety (LS) and collapse prevention (CP) performance levels. To reduce the computational burden of MCS process, the required nonlinear responses of the generated structures are predicted by RBF and BP models. The numerical results imply the superiority of BP to RBF in prediction of structural responses associated with performance levels. Finally, the obtained results demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed methodology for reliability assessment of RC and steel frame structures.

Abstract

A quick group search optimizer (QGSO) is an intelligent optimization algorithm which has been applied in structural optimal design, including the hinged spatial structural system. The accuracy and convergence rate of QGSO are feasible to deal with a spatial structural system. In this paper, the QGSO algorithm optimization is adopted in seismic research of steel frames with semi-rigid connections which more accurately reflect the practical situation. The QGSO is combined with the constraint from the penalty coefficients and dynamic time-history analysis. The performance of the QGSO on seismic design has been tested on a two-bay five-layer steel frame in this paper. The result shows that, compared with the PSO algorithm, the QGSO algorithm has better performance in terms of convergence rate and the ability to escape from local optimums. Moreover, it is feasible and effective to apply the QGSO to the seismic optimal design of steel framework.

A charged system search algorithm (CSS) is applied to the optimal cost design of water distribution networks. This algorithm is inspired by the Coulomb and Gauss’s laws of electrostatics in physics. The CSS utilizes a number of charged particles which influence each other based on their fitness values and their separation distances considering the governing law of Coulomb. The well-known benchmark instances, Hanoi network, double Hanoi network, and New York City tunnel problem, are utilized as the case studies to evaluate the optimization performance of CSS. Comparison of the results of the CSS with some other meta-heuristic algorithms indicates the performance of the new algorithm.

This paper describes the application of the recently developed metaheuristic algorithm for simultaneous analysis, design and optimization of Water Distribution Systems (WDSs). In this method, analysis is carried out using Colliding Bodies Optimization algorithm (CBO). The CBO is a population-based search approach that imitates nature’s ongoing search for better solutions. Also, design and cost optimization of WDSs are performed simultaneous with analysis process using a new objective function in order to satisfying the analysis criteria, design constraints and cost optimization. A number of practical examples of WDSs are selected to demonstrate the efficiency of the presented algorithm. Comparison of obtained results clearly signifies the efficiency of the CBO method in reducing the WDSs construction cost and computational time of the analysis.

In the area of semi-active control of civil structures, Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper has been an efficient mechanism for reducing the seismic response of structures. In this paper, an effective method based on defining an optimization problem for designing MR dampers has been proposed. In the proposed method, the parameters of semi-active control system are determined so that the maximum response of structure is minimized. To solve the optimization problem, the Genetic algorithm (GA) has been utilized. The modified Bouc-Wen model has been used to represent the dynamic behavior of MR damper while to determine the input voltage at any time step, the clipped optimal control algorithm with LQR controller has been applied. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a ten-storey shear frame subjected to the El-Centro excitation and for two different kinds of objective functions, optimal MR dampers have been designed. Then the performance of optimal MR damper has been tested under different excitations. The results of the numerical simulations have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method in designing optimal MR dampers that have the capability of reducing the response of the structures up to a significant level. In addition, the effect of selecting a proper objective function to achieve the best performance of MR dampers in decreasing different responses of structure has been shown.

In this paper, optimal design of arch dams is performed under frequency limitations. Colliding Bodies Optimization (CBO), a recently developed meta-heuristic optimization method, which has been successfully applied to several structural problems, is revised and utilized for finding the best feasible shape of arch dams. The formulation of CBO is derived from one-dimensional collisions between bodies, where each agent solution is considered as the massed object or body. The design procedure aims to obtain minimum weight of arch dams subjected to natural frequencies, stability and geometrical limitations. Two arch dam examples from the literature are examined to verify the suitability of the design procedure and to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the CBO in creating optimal design for arch dams. The results of the examples show that CBO is a powerful method for optimal design of arch dams.

Abstract

For most practical purposes, true topology optimization of a braced frame should be synchronized with its sizing. An integrated layout optimization is formulated here to simultaneously account for both member sizing and bracings’ topology in such a problem. Code-specific seismic design spectrum is applied to unify the earthquake excitation. The problem is solved for minimal structural weight under codified stress, deformation and also user-defined weak-storey and architectural constraints. Particle swarm optimization is hybridized with an extra memory consideration strategy to solve this problem. As another issue, Baldwin effect of memetic algorithm is utilized in the proposed method to enhance its search capability regarding the geometrical and topological constraints. Treating a number of planar braced frames revealed superior performance of the proposed hybrid method partiqularly in avoiding premature convergence over the common particle swarm optimiztion for such a discrete problem.

Abstract

A multi-objective heuristic particle swarm optimiser (MOHPSO) based on Pareto multi-objective theory is proposed to solve multi-objective optimality problems. The optimality objectives are the roof displacement and structure weight. Two types of structure are analysed in this paper, a truss structure and a framework structure. Performance-based seismic analysis, such as classical and modal pushover analysis, is carried out for the structures. Four optimality algorithms, namely, NSGA-II, MOPSO, MGSO, and MOHPSO, were used for structural optimisation to compare the effectiveness of the algorithms. The calculation results indicate that MOHPSO outperformed the other algorithms in terms of solution stability, universality, and consistency of the distribution of the Pareto front and the ability to consider constraints. The population can converge to the true Pareto front in the latter generations, which indicates that MOHPSO is effective for engineering multi-objective optimality problems.

Abstract

Practical design of tall frame-tube and diagrids are formulated as two discrete optimization problems searching for minimal weight undercodified constraints under gravitational and wind loading due to Iranian codes of practice for steel structures (Part 6 & Part 10). Particular encoding of design vector is proposed to efficiently handle both problems leading to minimal search space. Two types of modeling are employed for the sizing problem one by rigid floors without rotational degrees of freedom and the other with both translational and rotational degrees of freedom. The optimal layout of diagrids using rigid model is searched as the second problem. Then performance of Mine Blast Optimization as a recent meta-heuristic is evaluated in these problems treating a number of three-dimensional structural models via comparative study with the common Harmony Search and Particle Swarm Optimization. Considerable benefit in material cost minimization is obtained by these algorithms using tuned parameters. Consequently, effectiveness of HS is observed less than the other two while MBO has shown considerable convergence rate and particle swarm optimiztion is found more trustable in global search of the second problem.
