Fracture and Fatigue

  Fracture and Fatigue     Structural components and joints are inevitably subjected to cyclic loads with a variety of loading patterns including uniaxial, multiaxial, and variable amplitudes. To evaluate the safety, reliability and durability merits of components made of metallic and non-metallic materials, fracture and fatigue research isessential . Major issues related to component’s mass production, performance improvement through weight reduction, and enabling knowledge for the safe design and manufacturing needs to be addressed.   The focus is on fatigue and fracture characterization, testing and modeling of materials such as metallic, ceramics, composites, and rocks; similar and dissimilar joints and structures required to fabricate weight efficient vehicles and components. The research will address key issues involving the mixed mode fracture behavior, fatigue strength, low cycle fatigue resistance, over and under load effects, multi-axiality effect, underlying fatigue mechanism/parameter, and advance prediction model for CAE application.   In addition, our materials and manufacturing research extends emerging materials and new frontiers such as nanocomposites, micro- and nano- electromechanical systems (NEMS and MEMS), and biological tissues.   For more information about CEESMech fracture and fatigue initiatives, please select from the following research categories:       Characterization   Modeling   Performance   Emerging Materials   Joining & Welding
